“We doubled our house for £36,000”

When Claire and Mike Bradbury purchased their two-bedroom bungalow in Watford in 2009, they always intended to extend.

“It was quite a compact property with just 45 sqm of living space,” said Mike. “We had always planned to build a loft conversion and substantially increase our living space.”

The couple used Econoloft to help them design what would become an entire new floor of their home. Over the last few years, Econoloft has been carrying out more extensions than ever on bungalow house types.

Becke Livesey from Econoloft said: “Generally speaking, homeowners must carry out a full structural survey before starting any work on a bungalow loft conversion. The loft conversion has to be planned with the structural integrity of the building in mind. It goes without saying therefore, that you need to be working with experienced builders with the necessary professional affiliations and insurances in place.”

The Bradbury loft conversion is comprised of a master bedroom, a study and a bathroom and has added a further 40 sqm of accommodation – almost doubling the size of the house.

The conversion has seen the rest of the property being reconfigured too. One of the original bedrooms was taken out to make room for the new stairs, and the lounge has moved into what was that bedroom. The couple still have a spare room downstairs.

“Econoloft were here for around six weeks and I did my own wiring and plumbing,” said Mike. “To get the rooms to a liveable standard probably took around four months which is not bad considering we have nearly doubled the size of the house.

“The £36,000 loft conversion has proved a great investment which has added £60,000 to the value of the house but most importantly it has given us a fabulous living space in a great location inside the M25.”

Econoloft says it has worked with other families who have purchased a bungalow as an investment. “A true bungalow can really reap rewards for the canny investor,” said Becke. “If you have the time to extend your property, you will enjoy the benefits of both space and money as Mike and Claire have discovered.”
