According to the Office of National Statistics the number of people working from home in the UK is at an all-time high with 1.5 million people shunning the office. The benefits of working from home have been well documented, but unless you have the right space to work – the joys of working from home could be wiped out. And if finding space for one person to work from home, imagine the problems when you have two.
Jack Gillies a sound engineer and his wife Olivia a pharmaceutical researcher both have to work from home in their semi-detached home in Tunbridge Wells. The couple purchased the three-bedroom property a few years ago with a view to eventually converting the loft.
“Our house had three double bedrooms and I was using the smallest one as my office,” said Jack. “That leaves the master bedroom and our daughter’s room and so Olivia had to use the kitchen as her office which was obviously not ideal.”
Econoloft conversion made an impression.
When the couple were looking at homes to buy, they looked at a house which had an Econoloft loft conversion and were really impressed with the quality build and the space it added to the property. They kept Econoloft’s name in mind when it came to developing a loft in their new home. Sure enough, a few years after they had moved into their current home, they asked Econoloft to build a shell conversion.
The company developed a hip to gable loft conversion with a full-length dormer which has provided a spacious and flexible room and an ensuite shower room. The conversion itself cost around £18,000 but with the high spec bathroom and fixtures and fittings the total conversion came in at around £35,000 which Jack believes has already paid for itself in terms of the value it has added to their property.
‘The loft conversion is used by Olivia as an office,” said Jack. ‘However, it also makes a great guest room for Olivia’s mum who often comes from France to stay for a week at a time. She can now enjoy the privacy of her own bedroom with ensuite.”
The couple say the Econoloft loft conversion has had a positive impact on the quality of their life. Jack said: “We both have our own workspace and of course, we have our kitchen back! We have designed the loft conversion to be flexible so that as our situation changes we can use the room in any way we want.
“For now, however, the loft conversion has provided my wife with an office, my mother-in-law with her own space and has given us a fantastic second bathroom, that we use almost every day - who knows what it could be in a few years’ time?”
