Croydon is situated in South London and has a population of approximately 385,000. The town is mentioned in the Domesday Book and it’s name actually means Crocus Valley.
Residents love living in the town not least because of its fabulous transport links that will get you into central London in about half an hour – it’s even got handy to access Gatwick for those important holidays and is a mere 15.3 km south of Charing Cross. With 24-hour links into London thanks to the Gatwick Express, Croydon runs regular trains to London Bridge, Victoria, Gatwick Airport, Brighton and beyond. And so, it’s no wonder this is one of London’s most popular commuting belts and probably explains why Econoloft loft conversions are so prevalent here.
A Croydon loft conversion makes financial sense
According to Foxtons estate agency, the average three-bedroom home is £520,952, a four bed is £651,000 and a five bed is £896,667 – that means a family in a typical three bed home who want more space to grow, would have to pay an additional £130,000+ to move home and gain one extra bedroom. Add professional fees and stamp duty and it’s a very expensive proposition.
It’s no wonder Econoloft has so many clients in Croydon because a loft conversion in Croydon makes much more financial sense. We can build an additional bedroom, or even two bedrooms for a fraction of the cost of moving home to get that extra space.
Croydon offers great places to live
Famous Croydon residents include Adele, Tom Holland, Kate Moss and Stormzy and with so much going on it’s no wonder the area is a magnet for celebs.
As a large London borough, Croydon offers many different house types and architectural styles. Crystal Palace for example, still retains much of its impressive Victorian architecture from terraces to grand villas, while Shirley Oaks has some lovely new developments.
There are numerous residential areas in the borough, and each offers a slightly different atmosphere and so attracts a different demographic. Thornton Heath, Crystal Palace and Norbury are great for families, Waddon boasts the famous Surrey Street market as well as Boxpark and so attracts foodies of all ages, similarly Norwood offers lots of fabulous independent shops and eateries. Professionals also like South Croydon which offers both an easy commute into London as well as proximity to the North Downs for fresh air and country walks.
Shirley Oaks offer some exclusive homes while Wallington and Hackbridge boasts some great local pubs. Elmers End station will take you directly into Charing Cross and includes South Norwood Country Park for recreation.
Econoloft loft conversion gives Croydon family the space they needed
The Athawale family has lived in their Croydon terraced house for over 10 years, however, their extended family being frequent visitors they wanted more space.
‘My wife, son and I usually managed with our two bedrooms and a box room, but ours is a busy house with lots of people coming and going and although we love having people staying with us, things did feel a little cramped,” he said.
They did consider moving house to get extra space but found the price of a bigger house in the same area was not financially feasible and so decided that a loft conversion could give them the space they wanted at a fraction of the price.
Most of the loft conversion build can be done with minimum disruption to family life as the Econoloft team largely work on the conversion by going through the roof. “We didn’t really notice the workmen at all,” said Amit. “When we did speak to the workmen, they were always really helpful, and I liked them a lot.”
Econoloft completed the loft conversion in a couple of months and developed an additional bedroom with ensuite. This new bedroom is now home to Amit’s 15-year-old son who now has a large space to relax and study. The room benefits from double aspect windows, two Velux windows at one end and a triple window at the other. The light is accentuated by the décor, which includes a light wood floor and white walls
The room is configured so that the sleeping area and clothing storage is at one end, while the other hosts a desk and computer and even a piano. There is an ensuite shower room that offers contemporary grey and white tiling.
“Our son has the best room in the house,” said Amit. “He absolutely loves having his own space in the attic and he can practice his piano without disturbing anyone else. We knew we had a large loft but even so we were amazed at the size of the finished room, which is around 250 sq. which even has plenty of storage built in – another bonus.”
Now the Athawale can look forward to visits from their friends and family and be confident they now have plenty of space to accommodate them thanks to the spare bedroom which has now become available.
“We are so pleased with opted to have an Econoloft loft conversion,” said Amit. “It has allowed us to remain in the home and area we love for a fraction of the price of moving home. The whole house feels bigger somehow and we have so much more space we can all enjoy. What’s more the loft conversion has already paid for itself by adding value to our home and should we ever decide to sell in the future we know we have made a great investment for the future.”
Whatever your attraction to the area, a loft conversion on your Croydon home will give you space for your family to enjoy now but will also offer you an investment for the future as the figures above suggest.
