March is National Bed Month, a time to focus on better sleep, relaxation, and creating a sanctuary in your home. Your master bedroom should be more than just a place to sleep—it should be a luxurious retreat, a peaceful escape from daily stresses, and a space that reflects your personal style. A master bedroom remains the number one reason for choosing an Econoloft loft conversion and having built hundreds of lofts over our 40 years in business, we’re sharing some expert tips on designing the perfect bedroom.
Maximising Space and Layout
A loft conversion master bedroom provides a unique opportunity to make the most of every inch of space. Unlike traditional bedrooms, loft spaces often feature sloped ceilings, alcoves, and dormer windows, which can be turned into charming and functional design elements.
If you can, go for custom-built storage such as built-in wardrobes, under-eaves drawers, and bespoke shelving ensure you keep the space uncluttered and organised. In larger lofts you can create separate areas for sleeping, dressing, and even a cosy reading nook.
Build in plenty of light with dormer windows or a Juliet balcony which will flood the space with natural light, making your loft feel airy and bright. Position your bed to take advantage of natural light while ensuring there’s enough circulation space for a comfortable flow.
And talking of beds……
Since it's National Bed Month, let’s talk about the heart of your master bedroom—the bed! A loft conversion gives you the freedom to choose a luxurious centrepiece that complements the space.
Size Matters: A king-sized bed offers the ultimate comfort, but a well-chosen queen or double may be better suited for smaller loft spaces. Make a statement with the headboard. Opt for an upholstered headboard for a touch of elegance or go for a rustic wooden frame for a cosy, cottage-like feel.
It’s wise to invest in a high-quality mattress to ensure the best sleep. Memory foam, pocket-sprung, or hybrid mattresses provide optimal support and comfort.
And so, to sleep
Better sleep starts with a well-designed bedroom. Here’s how to optimise your space for rest and relaxation. Keep the light out with blackout blinds or curtains to ensure uninterrupted sleep. You can reduce noise with soft furnishings like carpets, curtains, and upholstered furniture to absorb sound and create a quiet sanctuary.
Add calming scents like lavender and chamomile with essential oil diffusers and make sure you leave technology outside the room – no mobile phones or tablets allowed.
Hotel elegance
Your master bedroom should feel like a boutique hotel suite—elegant and inviting. Use soft neutrals, calming blues or warm earth tones create a tranquil atmosphere. Darker shades like deep green or navy can add a touch of drama.
Layer different textures with soft rugs, velvet cushions, and cashmere throws to create warmth and depth and consider a statement wall with wallpaper, wooden panels, or exposed brick to add character and sophistication.
For the ultimate in hotel chic, where feasible we will always advise adding an en suite, you can never have enough bathrooms. Whether you want a walk-in Shower or a freestanding bath you will be glad of this additional room. If you have the budget why not splash out on some additional luxuries such as his and hers sinks or underfloor heating, perfect for those chilly mornings.
