How loft insulation can make your home more energy efficient

Whether you use your loft for storage purposes, or you are planning to convert it into living space, there are ways in which you can insulate your loft that can make your entire home more energy efficient.

Regular followers of our blog will know that this week we have been focusing on energy efficiency. So today we are going to take a look at the various ways in which you can insulate your loft, depending on what you want to use it for.

Why should you insulate your loft?
Heat rises so if your home is not insulated properly, you could lose a quarter (that’s 25%) of your heat through the roof. By insulating your loft, you can easily save that waste and reduce your heating bills as a result. What’s more, loft insulation lasts for a minimum of 40 years and it will more than pay for itself over and over in that time.

Choosing loft insulation

If you use your loft for storage:
If you plan to use your loft for storage purposes, you will need to lay boards over the joists. To get enough insulation, you have two options:
– Use mineral wool as insulation between the joists and then lay insulation boards over the top, with wooden boarding on top of that. If you plan to fit the insulation yourself, you can make things easier by buying insulation board pre-bonded to floor boarding. Or,
– You can raise the level of the floor in the loft to allow you space to fit enough mineral wool underneath. Try not to squash the mineral wool as this will reduce its insulation value.

If you use your loft for living space:
If you plan to convert your loft and use it as living space, you could put your insulation in the roof instead of the floor. Fix rigid insulation boards between the roof rafters and then cover them in plasterboard to neaten everything up. If your loft is fairly small, make sure you use the highest performance insulation board available.

Your loft can then be used…
As a home office, like this one seen on housetohome.co.uk. Make sure to include plenty of organisation solutions and save space with wall hanging storage.

For an extra bathroom or as a bedroom with en-suite bathroom if there’s enough space. Channel4.com recommends making the most of awkward spaces.

Did you know that by converting your loft, you could add significant value to your home? So if you insulate your loft and then convert it into extra living space, you’ll not only save money on heating and therefore make your home more energy efficient, but you’ll also increase the overall value of your property.
