Transforming a three-bedroomed terraced home into a five-bedroomed property was always in the minds of Claire and Ben O’Leary when they purchased their house in Banstead, Surrey.
“We moved from a larger house to this one, because it was in a much nicer location than our previous house,” said Claire. “The area also has great schools for our daughters Orla and Bella and is a shorter commute for Ben.
However, as we all know, price is very much determined by location, location, location and so the family couldn’t afford a big property in Banstead. Instead, they decided to purchase a smaller home and extend into the loft which was a much more affordable option.
Like many people Claire researched which company to use and found Econoloft on Mumsnet where it has some great reviews. Once meeting the Econoloft team, the couple were convinced it was the right company to use thanks to its expertise and knowledge. Econoloft also helped the family explain the implications of a loft to their neighbours.
Having looked at the loft space, Econoloft recommended the family build two bedrooms and a bathroom to make full use of the area available. What’s more the view from the top of the house offered a stunning vista of London and so a feature window was suggested which would take full advantage.
“We were glad Econoloft said we could get two bedrooms up there,” said Clare. “Our parents live too far away for them to just pop in for the day and so they often stay over. Having five bedrooms is a real bonus as we now have a fabulous guest room that is appreciated by everyone.”
Claire and Ben have the master bedroom which boasts that great view and for the moment at least, 20 month old Orla has been allocated the other loft bedroom. The former master bedroom has become the sought after guest room while 4-year-old Bella has the second largest room.
“We hope to have another baby at some point in the future and so having all these rooms is just great,” said Claire. “The second loft room is such a flexible space which can be a bedroom, a play room, another sitting room or even an office. This, together with the box room will allow our home to grow with the needs of our family.”
The loft conversion cost around £45,000 and the family believe it has added at least £100,000 to the value of their home.
“The work we have had done has not only created a family home we love in an area we want to live, but is a major investment for the future,” adds Claire. “If you think you can’t afford a large house where you want to live, consider buying the smaller house you can afford and add a loft conversion like we did.”
