C is for… conversions

Here at Econoloft, we’ve been in the loft conversion industry for over 40 years, which makes us something of an expert when it comes to transforming our customer’s lofts. So in keeping with our A to Z theme, it felt only right that today’s post was focused on types of loft conversion.

There are four types of conversion to choose from, including, Dormer, Roof light / Velux, Mansard, and Hip to Gable.

The most common type of loft conversion, a rear dormer is designed to create maximum floor space and height in the room, and it is often possible to construct a dormer loft without the need for planning permission.

A side dormer is common for those who live in a semi-detached house with a sloping roof. It is an extension to the existing roof in order to create additional floor space and height in the loft.

With a velux conversion, the line of the roof remains unaltered and the room is created using the existing loft space. This type of conversion is cost effective and can be useful in circumstances when planning permission causes an issue.

A mansard loft conversion is similar to a dormer although it is built on a flat roof and comprises a front wall that is sloped inwardly at about 70 degrees. This type of loft conversion requires prior planning permission before construction can commence.

Hip to Gable
With a hip to gable conversion, the sloped side of the property, i.e. the hipped side, is altered to the flat gable end. This is done with the intention of creating a much larger space in the loft and gives the homeowner the opportunity to make the most of the room space.
